Lots of folks ask us where the shop name comes from, so, here it is...
Back in the late '80s the great Irish bike racer Sean Kelly was about to win the France stage race Paris-Nice for a record seventh time. The previous record of six wins was held by the Frenchman Jacques Anquetil. I bet you see where this is heading... Paris-Nice being a French race and Anquetil being a French National Hero, the French press reacted to Kelly "stealing" their race by saying he was riding "the devil's gear." Kelly won the race and still holds the record for number of wins. After that, if any of my buddies was riding better then anyone of us, we would say, "look at you go -- you're riding the devil's gear!"
In 1999 when I decided to open my own bike shop,a friend and fellow racer said, "YOU GOTTA CALL IT THE DEVIL'S GEAR!" and the rest is history.
"I'm on my bike!"
Learning to ride a bike is among my oldest memories. I grew up riding bikes and have known little time without one. I started racing young and raced till I was 28.
As a kid I would work the pit area with those great mechanics from Campy and Mavic Neutral Support. They were magicians. To learn from them I was deeply eager and honored.
I began riding after that...a lot of long tours. No better way to see places. That whole time I was learning my craft. Every book I could read, I would and every class I could take, I did.
I jumped at the first chance I got to work in a shop and it all lead me having my own shop. I realized I wanted to give back to people all that cycling had given to me. Which is a lot.
